In a long-awaited homecoming that bridges two decades of raw emotion and resilience, Manchester’s alt-rock/dark pop trailblazers Lane Candy are thrilled to announce their reunion with legendary producer Liam Creed and Riffuge Studio Productions for the digital re-release of their seminal 2005 debut album, Night Shift. What began as a stormy chapter in the band’s early career has evolved into a testament to forgiveness, artistic growth, and unbreakable bonds—proving that true collaboration endures.
Formed in 2003 amid the gritty haze of Manchester’s post-millennial scene, Lane Candy—led by the charismatic trio of Jasper “Jace” Hargreaves (vocals & guitar), Lila “Lune” Patel (bass & backing vocals), and Maeve “Moxie” Connolly (keyboards & synths)—captured the era’s urban melancholy with shimmering guitars, pulsating basslines, and haunting synth layers. At just 20 years old, these self-taught visionaries dropped everything to channel the city’s neon-lit turmoil into music that echoed the likes of White Lies and The xx. Jace’s emotive riffs, drawn from late-night Salford sketches; Lune’s poetic bass grooves, forged in Cheetham Hill gigs; and Moxie’s quirky digital experiments from Withington’s student haunts, birthed Night Shift—a moody masterpiece of love, isolation, and nocturnal defiance.
But the album’s launch in 2005 was marred by controversy. The original CD cover, a striking color photo of the band standing and dressed suggestively on a rain-slicked London street—(the girls were not wearing skirts or shorts- the complaints reported them to the standard board) – evoking the raw, unfiltered vibe of their name and sound—was deemed too provocative for the time. Retailers pulled it from shelves, sparking a rift with Creed, who the band felt mishandled the fallout amid the era’s conservative music industry pressures. “It was tasteful to us—art reflecting life’s edges,” reflects Jace Hargreaves. “But it left scars.” Retaining full rights, Lane Candy swiftly reproduced the artwork and redistributed through an independent label, forging ahead with resilience that defined their sound.
Over the years, Creed—ever the underground architect—quietly worked to mend fences, reaching out through evolving lineups and shared mutual respect. “Liam’s passion for our story never wavered,” says Lune Patel. “We’ve both grown; this feels right.” Today, at 42, the core trio stands stronger, blending their mid-2000s fire with matured introspection. Creed, now at the helm of Riffuge Studio Productions in Dallas, Texas (with outposts in Denver), shares the sentiment: “What do I think? It’s poetic justice. We lost sight once, but music’s about second chances. Night Shift deserves the digital glow it was born for.”
The re-release, available September 25 on all major streaming platforms via Riffuge, features refreshed mastering while honoring the original’s lo-fi heart. Fans can expect a subtle nod to the infamous cover art—reimagined with a modern, empowered twist.
