Listen up, rockers, punks, dreamers, and every indie soul grinding it out in the trenches. We just got booted from Bandcamp. Yeah, the platform that was supposed to be the home for real artists like us. Why? Because our tracks are “AI enhanced.”
Well, fuck that noise. Let’s talk straight about AI in the music industry in 2026. I’m a rocker through and through—anti-robot, anti-soulless automation. But I’m also calling bullshit on the selective outrage. I’m optimistically cautious. AI isn’t the devil, but the industry gatekeepers sure as hell are treating it like one when it comes to the little guys.
My Process – Human as Hell, Tools Included
My workflow hasn’t changed at the core. It starts with a concept, a vibe, a riff or lyric that sticks in my head like a bad hangover. I obsess over it for hours—playing notes and progressions in my skull, double-checking I didn’t accidentally lift it from somewhere. I don’t want to get accused of stealing.
When I get stuck? Sure, I pop it into a computer. Play back the loop, layer on top. I grab marketplace loops or synths. And yeah, I’ve been hit with “you stole that mainstream sound” notices—because everyone uses the same damn free loops. Even Joe’s country track got dinked by Snoop Dogg vibes once over a shared double bass beat. Come on.
A few years ago (feels like yesterday—am I getting old?), dubstep was “fake music.” Laptop spacebar warriors. Now it’s in every big name track. How’s that real, but me building a progression with AI assistance isn’t?
I tour solo sometimes—guitar, mic, dive bar sweat. The sound guy cues my CD or laptop for the next track while I play over it. Is that fake? Hell no. It’s performance. AI has a place: generating a base progression from my chords and vibe so I can build something real on top. DistroKid gets it—they added a simple checkbox for “AI enhanced or in part generated.” Click, upload, move on. Respect.
The Real Hypocrisy: Big Names vs. Indies
Early AI sounded like garbage—tinny vocals, robotic everything. We messed with it, parked it, came back when it improved. Today, artists drop “fa la la” stems and let it handle the rest. You can hear the digital hiss or pixelated underlayer with good headphones if you know what to listen for. But it’s getting damn good.
The kick in the nuts? This pushback hammers smaller artists, bands, indies, and studios hardest. We don’t have millions for promo machines or union muscle. We want a fair path to exposure and sales. AI speeds that up without feeding the “music mafia.” Yet here we are, getting screwed again.
Big studio darlings? They’re snorting lines on yachts, not strumming notebooks. They prompt a genre, slap their voice on AI output, “learn” the track for the next show, and call it authentic. Studios do this daily. No deplatforming for them. Meanwhile, we lose money and momentum.
Stats back this: Global recorded music revenue hit around $31.7 billion in 2025 (IFPI), with indies growing faster than majors in many segments—yet AI tools are exploding (market from ~$4.5B in 2025 toward double digits soon). Surveys show 33% of musicians use AI for ideas/melodies, 26% for backing tracks in final releases (Berklee). Another study? Up to 87% incorporate it somewhere in their process (LANDR). Modern pop hardly starts with pure notepad and guitar anymore—let’s be real.
The Human Cost and Moving Forward
We lost Sam Nolan Carter—not to AI, but to stress, overwork, and the grind of running the studio while expanding. He was our web/tech genius, best guitar/amp/sound guy around. Gave him a break instead of cracking him. Tried replacing him; burnout city. We slowed some things, and boom—Bandcamp deplatform. It was making real money.
Appeal? Nah. I didn’t build an indie-friendly studio to kiss ass. Some bands bailed for “mainstream” deals after we produced their debuts at cost. Cool—chase the high life. But Bandcamp could’ve just kept the checkbox and banked off us. Instead: “Human only or bust.” Welcome to the new deal—same as the old. Screw the little guys.
